What is chkdsk utility and what are its result?

i am getting an error from a week that the file or directory is corrupt and unreadable, please run the chkdsk utility. I understand about a file going corrupt is but what is this chkdsk utility? Which i think is its solution. how will i be able to run it? and what results it will leave to my pc?
